Since the time we arrived in Canada as landed immigrants in 2005, Aparna, my wife, our two sons and I, joined a stereotyped daily routine typical to the GTA, long hours in office and on the GO train. While it surely got us to where we are financially, I knew each monotonous day was precious time in our lives wasted, that we would never get back. The only release we experienced was on weekends when Aparna and I, would go out for long drives in the countryside, shop in farm markets, stop by lakes and waterfronts to throw in a line and see if it caught fish, visit orchards, farm markets, taste wine in the wine country, visit antique stores, farm crawls and so much more. Thankfully the town of Ancaster where we resided was the gateway to the vast and rich agricultural expanses of Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk counties. Norfolk apparently is the fruit capital of Ontario.
The weekend’s activity would play in our minds and invigorate us through the week ahead. Come Saturday, and it was rendezvous time once again and another couple of days of extreme excitement. The adrenaline would race within us even just thinking of the possibilities of being one with nature once again. It was apparent to me we had found our life’s calling. This is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, be one with nature and the ecosystem, grow our own food and experience the utmost happiness it brings. It was then just a matter of a decision and taking the plunge.
We began this journey in 2019 ahead of investing our first dollar in the venture. We did solid homework, studying urban farming, learning about livestock, understanding permaculture, rain water harvesting, organic farming of vegetables, microgreens, bee keeping, composting, growing hay for the livestock, best practices from other homesteads, visiting farms on sale and understanding the agricultural real estate marketplace.
But we certainly had a few things going for us. After all, had we not pulled it off with settling down well despite arriving here on the wrong side of our economic lives, raising two great boys who now contribute well to society and amply demonstrated the intellectual acumen to learn things on the go?
Why not ‘run a farm’ and realize our dreams? By the way, SO CAN YOU!
